I've had my well-read copy of Zen in the Martial Arts since high school, more than 20 years ago. It's a book that I can go back to year after year and find something new to ponder... and it should be read by everyone who practices traditional martial arts. I was sorry to hear about his death.

I am so sorry to hear about his passing. Joe Hyams was a role model of mine and he was truly versed in the arts of the pen and the sword.
My copy of his book, "Zen in the Martial Arts," is barely holding up after all the moves on which it has accompanied me and from all the people to whom I lent it.
I remember one time in particular, I lent the book to my old boxing coach, Steve Williams. He was also experienced in other martial arts and held a shodan in jujitsu.
It was during a keg party, with loud music and people coming and going, talking loudly. Steve started reading that book and couldn't put it down. He read the whole thing, completely oblivious to everything going on around him.
